Canada: Calls to close institutions for people with learning difficulties.

Posted 19/11-09 at 19.24

The Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS) have renewed their demand for the closure of all segregated institutions. This comes in reaction to a report of 43 cases of abuse in Nova Scotia between October 2007 and July 2009.

The CDSS claims these institutions are a breeding ground for abuse and violence. They also agree with the Canadian Association for Community Living and People First of Canada that putting people in these places is a violation of their human rights.

They call for funding to allow people with learning difficulties to be supported to live in their communities and to participate fully in social and economic life.
