Bangladesh: DPO delegation meets Speaker of Parliament

3 women and 3 men in a group around main in wheelchair - he's holding a file in hand with another A seven-member joint delegation of Bangladesh Protibandhi Kallyan Somity (BPKS) and National Alliance of Disabled Peoples' Organizations (NADPO) met Md. Abdul Hamid Advocate M. P, the Honorable Speaker of Bangladesh Parliament on August 24, 2009.

The team members discussed various issues with the Speaker concerning disability, including: disabled people rights, effective predication of disabled peoples organizations and development issues in general, as well as the legal and institutional tools for improving the quality of life of disabled people in Bangladesh.

Among the specific concerns raised were the need to:

  • Include disabled people's interests in national policy on education and healthcare reforms
  • Improve access of disabled peoples to job market
  • Change rules so interest of disabled people is not confined to Ministry of Social Welfare
  • Show respect towards Constitution and international conventions and treaties as far as disabled peoples interest is concerned

  • Recruit disabled persons for the jobs in Parliament Improve access for of disabled persons in the Parliament
  • Reserve two seats in Parliament for qualified disabled persons in each of the six administrative divisions

  • Include disabled people's national network, National Alliance of Disabled Peoples Organizations - NADPO in different Parliamentary Standing Committees.
