New Zealand: Independent living options must be made available

Posted 21/2-11 at 23.21

Ross Brereton, CEO of Disabled Persons Assembly (DPA), the umbrella body for New Zealand DPOs, has reminded the government of their duties under Article 19 (right to independent living) of the CRPD.

He says that there is a long way to go before disabled people and government understand the intentions of the CRPD. Currently disabled people do not have real choice over where they live. For example, the inappropriate placement of hundreds of younger disabled people in rest homes for elderly people, comes about because of a lack of alternative community living options and accessible housing.

Brereton added that talk about the possible need for larger residential facilities is unhelpful and unsettling to disabled people and their families and would be in breach of the UN Convention.
