Posted 02/6-09 at 00.13

The National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia ratified the UN Convention on Disability Rights and the Optional Protocol on Friday, 29th May 2009.

For Serbians, the Convention does not create new rights for disabled people but defines the mechanisms for their equal participation in general in civil, political, economical, social and cultural rights.

This is a historical day for them as the Convention is the first international legally obligatory document on disability rights. By ratifying the Convention and Protocol, the Serbian state has obligations to provide human rights and basic freedoms, consultations and include participation of disabled people in this process.
