China: Disabled people enslaved in sweatshops

A man in southwest Sichuan Province has been arrested for allegedly selling 11 laborers, including eight with learning difficulties or mental health problems, to a sweatshop in the northwest Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The workers have been confined to the factory for at least three years without being paid or given any protective uniforms or equipment. They were forced to live in shabby conditions, not given showers for years and fed the same food as the boss' dogs.

Cases involving people with mental health problems or learning difficulties being sold and used as forced laborers have been reported throughout the country.

In 2006, police in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, arrested Zhou Jinghuan, a local woman, who was found to be selling around 1,000 beggars and disabled people a year to be used as forced labor in brick factories or mines.
