India: Disabled women face major barriers to employment

Posted 09/12-10 at 11.57

A report, ‘Employment Rights of Disabled Women in India' carried out by the Society for Disability and Rehabilitation of the National Commission for Women (NCW) has found that disabled women are largely excluded from paid work not because of their impairments, but due to social and practical barriers.

The barriers include lack of proper access and education, as well as employers’ reluctance to hire disabled people. As a result, many disabled people live in poverty and are often reduced to begging on the streets.

In India, 75% of disabled persons live in rural areas, about 50% are illiterate and only 34 per cent are employed in some or other way.
