International: Disabled people happy and unhappy about how they are portrayed in the media

Posted 23/10-10 at 15.54

Last summer [2010], a worldwide online survey of disabled people was done to find out what they think about how they are represented in the media.

The almost 400 disabled people and organizations who responded said that television has become more empowering in its representation of disabled people. People were considerably more negative about the news media. Overwhelmingly, it was felt that news items were framed within a disempowering medical model of disability.
