USA: Employment programs fail to assist disabled people

Posted 15/9-10 at 23.24

A study carried out by the University of Kansas has found two major federal government programs designed to help disabled people find jobs are not working.

"The biggest problem is that these are one-size-fits-all programs," said one of the researchers. Because of this disabled people are getting lost in the system.

This is a serious problem as 63% of disabled people in the USA are without jobs.

Researchers found that disabled people in these programs have extremely low self-esteem, and ‘...the staff at the [employment] center is not well-prepared to address their particular needs. That response reinforces their feelings of disempowerment - that the system is not really there to help them."
