Judy Heumann, a well-known international disability rights advocate, has been appointed Special Advisor for International Disability Rights at the U.S. Department of State.

Between 2002 - 2006, Judy was the Advisor on Disability and Development for the World Bank. She served as President Clinton's Assistant Secretary for the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services from 1993 -2001. She was a cofounder of both the World Institute on Disability and the Berkeley Center for Independent Living.

Editorial comment: DAA is extremely pleased to hear of Judy's appointment. She will be a strong voice for the ratification of the UN Convention by the US. Her experience of disability and development will also help move disability more firmly into the mainstream of US aid policy. We warmly congratulate Judy and wish her well in her new and challenging job.
