Posted 13/5-10 at 13.16

The following Action Alert has been issued by the European Network on Independent Living (ENIL).

Europe is going through an important stagewith the policies for the next 10 years at stake. The Lisbon Treaty has now come to an end and the Council of Ministers are drawing up the EU 2020 strategy, which will be the Treaty for the next 10 years.

ENIL director, John Evans stresses the importance of urgent action concerning the 2020 Strategy: "Now is the time to act for the inclusion ofIndependent Living forEuropeans with disabilities in EU policy."

At the moment it is not clear that disability will be included on the agenda for the EU 2020 strategy. At their Annual General Assembly, the European Disability Forum (EDF) asked members to lobby Ministers in each country.

ENIL urges members and supporters across Europe to lobby your Minister of Employment and Social Affairs immediately to insist that the Disability Pact be included in the new treaty. This needs to be done before 20 May when they meet for the Presidency Ministerial Conference in Zaragoza.
