Europe: European Disability Forum (EDF) meets President of the European Council

Posted 20/4-10 at 22.18

On April 16th, leaders of the EDF met Herman Van Rompuy, the new President of the European Council. The meeting was called to lobby for the mainstreaming of disability in the forthcoming 10-year strategy for economic and social development in the EU.

The EDF argued that their European Disability Pact, a coordinated and sustainable disability policy framework at European and national level, should be brought into the Europe 2020 Strategy. This "...will give new impetus to the social inclusion of persons with disabilities, recognizing disability as a cross cutting issue."

Van Rompuy said, "I understand the necessity of a new approach to disability policies in the EU." He also endorsed the State of the Union on Disability, a biennial meeting to assess measures taken on disability and report about these to the European Council.

Editorial: A picture is worth 1000 words. The formal, static, EU-bland photo above is worth at least 1000 times as many. Just weight up the vast quantity of words spoken and written on disability in the EU, the meetings and the promises and compare them with what has been achieved for disabled people.

The changes we need are well known and have been laid out time and time and time again. The missing ingredient is positive, transformative action. Any hint of that in the photo or Van Rompuy's careful, bureaucrat words?
