India: Disabled teacher wins back job

Posted 24/3-10 at 18.22

The country's Supreme Court has ordered that Syed Bashir-ud-Quadri, a teacher with cerebral palsy, be given back his post. Two year ago, after a complaint from another candidate that he was unsuitable to teach, a state court decision stripped him of his position.

Now, the Supreme Court has reversed that decision. They pointed out that not only was he suitable, but that the scheme under which he had been employed was designed to rehabilitate disabled people. The judges called Quadri's appeal "a story of his struggle to make himself independent and to find an identity for himself against enormous odds".
